Malaysia @ 2D1N: Kukup (10 - 11 May 2008)

Went on a 2D1N weekend getaway to Kukup with 10 of my lifesaving coursemates from 10 to 11 may 2008. The man who helped us with the administration was Dennis. The package was only at SGD86 each, consisting of accommodation, 2-way transfers and 5 meals. It was pretty worth it as 3 of the meals consisted of seafood. We were basically eating in every few hours, according to the itinerary. We were picked up from Kranji MRT in an excursion bus at 8am. The driver took us for breakfast at a coffee shop in Johor. They have food like Chee Cheong Fun (+Yong Tau Foo), Fried Kway Teow, Prawn Noodles, Carrot Cake etc, which made us spoilt for choices. Breakfast was at our own expenses.

After breakfast, we continued our bus journey for another 1 hour plus before arriving at the Kukup Fishing Village. We were given some time to walk around before it was lunch time. Hence, we explored through the lanes and shops. There were shops selling different types of fireworks, provision shops, VCD/DVD shops etc. Of course, the fireworks got our attention and we finally decided to get some for the night. There were some houses which looked quite impressive at such a place.

Then, it was our seafood lunch where there were quite a number of dishes and a big bowl of rice for us to scoop from. The taste of the food was ordinary, nothing special though. After lunch, we were brought to our destination via a less than 5 minute ferry ride.

We arrived at the chalet area and were introduced to the place and brought to our chalet. The chalet was just like a bungalow house. The rooms were filled with double-decked beds which can accommodate up to 12 or more people in a room. A while after settling down, some of us played mahjong while some went fishing. Fishing rods could be rented and we used the prawns we caught with the net as the bait. We caught a stingray and didnt know that it was pregnant until we saw something dropped from the stingray. We deduced that perhaps the stingray was frightened by us that its baby just came out like that. It was so cool but we felt kinda bad about it.

We got a little bored and decided to go for a walk and explore the place. As we walked, we noticed a primary school and oh my, it was so old school! Just look at the classroom deco and desks. It was quite an interesting experience to me cos i have never visited such schools before. At the end of our walk, we realized that the Chalet is actually linked to the town area as in there was actually no need for a ferry ride. But I think it was just part of the experience.

Our dinner was BBQ seafood. How often will you get to enjoy BBQ food without having to cook them yourself? And most importantly, everything was well seasoned and not burnt unlike what most of us have eaten before. And you wouldnt have to wait for food cos there seemed to be a ready supply of cooked food. Also, you wouldnt have to share with other groups cos they have an area allocated just for each group. We had prawns as big as a hand! Overall, the BBQ was awesome! Fireworks followed after dinner. Everyone including other groups, took turns to light their fireworks and some were really pretty even though they seemed kinda scary.

We then returned to our chalet to wash up and also for a KTV session. The songs were not updated and the most recent were Jay Chou's songs i suppose. Played some card games and watched TV during the night before we decided to head for bed.

The next morning, we had nasi lemak for breakfast and checked out at almost 11am. We had to pay cash and it took us a while to get the money correct. Had a couple of group shots before we boarded the ferry for a Fish Kelong Tour which was in the itinerary. The tour was nothing much but just to show us how they rear the fishes etc. You could really see the fishes "jumping" when we threw bread into the water.

It was definitely a relaxing and sinful getaway cos we seemed to be always eating. We even stopped at JB's City Square to shop and of course buy Secret Recipe's cakes. It is very cheap in Malaysia, almost half the price of Singapore's.
